Accessibility at Quell

We believe a focus app should be usable by everyone who wants to reclaim their attention. Quell is built with SwiftUI on Apple's accessibility frameworks, so the features below work consistently across iPhone and iPad.

VoiceOver

Interactive controls carry written labels instead of leaving you to guess at an icon — the Settings, stats and new-rule buttons, the strict-mode toggle and the home status summary all read as words. Decorative artwork, Quill included, is hidden from the reading order so it doesn't clutter it. Meaningful state is announced and not just names: a selected plan or theme, a locked premium option, which weekday is active, and whether an achievement is unlocked or still locked.

What we can't yet claim: we have not completed a screen-by-screen audit with VoiceOver switched on. So if you meet a control that reads wrongly — or reads as nothing at all — that is a bug, not a limitation, and we want the report.

Voice Control

Because controls are labeled for VoiceOver, they are addressable by voice as well, so most of Quell can be operated hands-free. The same caveat as above applies: labeled by design, not yet verified screen by screen.

Larger Text (Dynamic Type)

Text scales with your system text-size setting, including the larger accessibility sizes, and layouts are built to reflow and wrap rather than truncate — the rule editor, the plan comparison table and the home cards were each adjusted for the largest sizes specifically. A few display elements, such as the app name on the welcome screen, use a fixed size and do not scale.

Not color alone

Important states don't rely on color by itself. Selected days show a filled versus outlined shape, on/off uses a switch position, warnings pair their color with an icon and text, and the block screen says in words which rule is blocking you and what it covers — so the interface is perceivable regardless of how you see color.

Reduce Motion — partly supported

Quill, our mascot, holds completely still when you have Reduce Motion switched on: no breathing, no blinking. The ambient glows behind the home and upgrade screens don't check the setting yet, and neither do screen-transition animations. Finishing that is on the list below.

Dark interface

Quell fully supports a dark appearance and follows your system Light/Dark setting, for comfortable use in low light.

Built-in Apple accessibility

Because Quell is a native app, system-wide features such as Bold Text, Reduce Transparency, Zoom, and Spoken Content work with it the way they do across iOS and iPadOS.

What we're still improving

On the list, in order: a complete screen-by-screen VoiceOver and Dynamic Type audit; honoring Reduce Motion everywhere rather than only for Quill; and enhanced color-contrast options for the custom premium themes. We'd rather tell you what's next than overstate what's done.
